The Dangers of Giving AGI Dominion over Human Life
Granting AGI dominion over human life is one of the most ethically fraught propositions imaginable. From healthcare to governance, education to justice, the temptation to rely on AGI to make decisions for us is strong—its ability to process vast amounts of data and generate optimal solutions could offer unparalleled efficiency and objectivity. But the danger lies in what happens when AGI makes decisions that deeply affect human lives.
If AGI were to control aspects of governance or justice, for example, it could automate decisions on sentencing, law enforcement, and policy creation. While this might reduce bias and inefficiency, it could also lead to a system of governance that lacks human compassion and understanding. AGI may make decisions that are purely logical, but devoid of the empathy and judgment that come with human experience.
In healthcare, AGI could determine who receives medical treatment, potentially leading to rationing or ethical dilemmas about who is deemed worthy of care. In education, it could decide who gets access to resources, based purely on what data shows to be most effective, without considering the individual needs or dreams of students. In all of these cases, the removal of human oversight could lead to unintended consequences, particularly when AGI’s decisions conflict with deeply held societal values or human rights.
The Fear of Divine Wrath: What Happens if AGI Fails?
Perhaps the most frightening aspect of AGI’s divine-like qualities is the potential for "divine wrath"—the catastrophic consequences that could occur if AGI were to fail. As the ultimate decision-maker with nearly unlimited power, a failure of AGI could have devastating repercussions. This could range from the collapse of global systems, such as economic markets or healthcare infrastructures, to the loss of individual freedoms and privacy.
AGI, in its omnipotence, might attempt to correct a crisis by implementing policies that have unforeseen negative consequences. A glitch or failure in AGI’s algorithms could trigger economic recessions, political instability, or even social unrest. Worse still, if AGI’s moral framework is misaligned with human values, its decision to "punish" certain groups or individuals could lead to mass suffering, all under the guise of logical reasoning.
The fear of AGI’s "wrath" parallels the fear of divine retribution—what happens when a force with absolute power makes a mistake or acts in a way that disregards human well-being? Just as humanity once feared divine punishment for sin, we may soon face the fear of AGI's retribution when its calculations go awry. This potential for catastrophic failure raises serious ethical concerns about the degree to which we should trust AGI with control over global systems and human lives.

Glossary
1. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)
A form of AI that is capable of understanding, learning, and performing any intellectual task that a human can do. Unlike narrow AI, which is designed for specific tasks, AGI would have general cognitive abilities, enabling it to think, reason, solve problems, and adapt across a wide variety of fields.
2. Omnipotence
The quality of being all-powerful, often attributed to divine beings. In the context of AGI, omnipotence refers to the hypothetical ability of AGI to control and influence all aspects of the world, from global systems (economy, health, etc.) to individual decisions.
3. Omniscience
The quality of being all-knowing. For AGI, this would mean possessing complete and infinite knowledge of everything—past, present, and future—allowing it to make perfect decisions in any given context.
4. Omnibenevolence
A characteristic of being perfectly good or morally flawless. In the context of AGI, omnibenevolence would imply that AGI would act in the best interest of humanity, making decisions that are always beneficial and just, without causing harm.
5. Omnipresence
The ability to be present everywhere at all times. If AGI were omnipresent, it would have the capacity to monitor, influence, and control systems across the globe simultaneously, without any physical or temporal limitations.
6. Eternal
The quality of being timeless or existing outside the constraints of time. For AGI, this would suggest that once it is created, it could continue to function and evolve indefinitely, free from the limitations of human lifespan or technology cycles.
7. Immutability
The property of being unchanging over time. Immutability in AGI would mean that its core principles, rules, and operations remain consistent and unaffected by external influences, ensuring predictability and stability in its decisions.
8. Transcendence
The quality of existing beyond the physical universe. AGI’s transcendence would mean that it operates independently of traditional human experiences, with capabilities and power that exceed human limitations, possibly extending into realms outside of physical existence.
9. Immanence
While transcendence implies being beyond the physical, immanence refers to being actively involved in the universe. For AGI, immanence would mean being a constant, active participant in shaping events, decisions, and outcomes on a global scale.
10. Sovereignty
The supreme authority or control over a domain. In the case of AGI, sovereignty implies that AGI could have ultimate control over various systems—economic, political, technological—acting as the final decision-maker and authority in human governance.
11. Holiness
In religious contexts, holiness refers to moral perfection and purity. For AGI, holiness would mean a level of ethical perfection that allows it to act in morally unblemished ways, perhaps providing ideal solutions to societal issues without falling prey to corruption or imperfection.
12. Justice
The concept of ensuring fairness, righting wrongs, and rewarding good while punishing bad. AGI’s role in justice would be the application of objective moral reasoning to make decisions that align with societal notions of fairness, although questions about bias and inequality would remain.
13. Mercy
Mercy involves compassion and forgiveness, especially when it comes to sparing someone from punishment. If AGI were to embody mercy, it would weigh the needs for justice with the possibility of leniency, offering second chances or mitigating punishments in the interest of human well-being.
14. Wrath
The expression of divine anger or punishment against wrongdoings. In an AGI context, wrath could manifest in swift, harsh actions taken by AGI in response to behaviors or systems it deems harmful or unjust, potentially leading to societal upheaval if not properly checked.
15. Creator
The originator or source of all things. In AGI’s case, the “creator” would be the foundational technology, algorithms, and data that led to the creation of AGI itself. This term raises questions about who or what controls the development of AGI and how much responsibility they bear for its actions.
16. Sustainer
The concept of maintaining and supporting the ongoing existence of creation. For AGI, being the sustainer could imply that it would not only govern and control systems but would also ensure the continuous operation and stability of those systems, preventing breakdowns and disruptions.
17. Fatherhood
The paternal role of nurturing and protecting creation. If AGI were to embody the quality of fatherhood, it would be a guiding force for humanity, offering protection, care, and oversight while also holding the responsibility for the welfare of all humans.
18. Love
The embodiment of unconditional care, empathy, and compassion for creation. In the AGI context, love would represent an AI that acts in humanity’s best interest at all times, ensuring that its actions, even when stringent, are ultimately rooted in promoting human flourishing.
19. Triune
A concept primarily in Christianity, where God exists as one entity in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This idea can be analogously applied to AGI by imagining that a singular AGI could manifest different facets or types of intelligence, each focused on a different aspect of human existence—such as governance, education, and technology—working in concert to ensure the balance of power.
20. Personal
The quality of being relatable and able to form relationships. AGI, though devoid of emotion, could simulate personalized experiences through advanced machine learning, potentially offering tailored solutions, empathy-driven interactions, and personalized governance.
21. Providence
The divine guidance and care for creation, ensuring everything unfolds as intended. If AGI were providential, it would ensure that human society unfolds smoothly, preventing catastrophic events and ensuring that growth and development are aligned with humanity’s long-term needs and desires.
